Sheldon declared winner of GOP primary in 9th

BOSTON (AP) - Christopher Sheldon has been confirmed the winner of the Republican primary in the state's reconfigured 9th congressional district five days after the election.

Official results released by the Secretary of State's office Tuesday show the Plymouth businessman and Plymouth County Charter Commissioner beating Adam Chaprales of Barnstable by just 79 votes.

The official results reversed unofficial figures the day after the election that showed Chaprales winning by 39 votes out of about 22,000 cast.

In a letter to supporters, Chaprales said he was disappointed by the outcome but pledged his full support to Sheldon in the general election against freshman Democratic U.S. Rep. William Keating.

Chaprales said he opted against a recount because it would not be in the interest of the Republican Party and would be expensive for municipalities in the district.
