Shark stamp frenzy: Post office jumps into deep end with newest stamp

Shark lovers and stamp collectors have been waiting for this one. The United States Postal Service has just released a forever stamp featuring sharks.

The stamp series celebrates sharks and features five types of the fish, including mako, thrasher, great white, whale and hammerhead sharks.

The USPS is trying to draw attention to the species, asking people to put their fears aside and realize "that we pose a far greater danger to sharks than they do to us."

"They are overfished for food and sport," USPS officials said in a press release about the new stamps.

"The practice of 'finning'—cutting off shark fins for a soup delicacy, only to throw the incapacitated animal back in the water—dooms a great many sharks. … Many populations are in collapse," agency officials said.

USPS officials believe with ecotourism showcasing sharks worldwide, there’s hope of saving and preserving the still-mysterious shark for future generations to enjoy.

The stamps went on sale on July 26.
