Shark caught on camera feeding feet from Race Point Beach

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. — A shark attack just feet from shore stunned several people at Race Point Beach Tuesday night.

Sarah Chapman told FOX25 she was on the Provincetown beach with her two sons to watch the sunset when they saw a seal jump out of the water.

A short time later, Chapman said, the family saw another splash and realized that a large shark had captured the seal.

“Watching the whole event was the most spectacular thing I have ever seen. It all happened at dusk and about 10 to [1]3 feet from shore. I will never, ever go I these waters again. Holy cow. What an experience. The kids are still reeling from watching the event,” Chapman said.

A fisherman, Adam Kossler, was also on the beach at the time and he caught the attack on camera.

"It was just awesome, it was incredible," Kossler said. "A shark shaking around a 400-pound seal like it was nothing. It was just, it makes you feel about this big."

Shark researcher Greg Skomal works with Mass Fisheries and this is not a common event.

"Just witnessing an attack on a seal has been somewhat rare for us," he said.

Skomal said it's also rare to see a great white shark near the northern parts of Cape Cod.

"This is the second time we've seen an attack in this area and that's starting to lead to some level of predictability," he said. "It's not overly surprising to me that the shark's moving to shallow water to attack the seal, but I think the public needs to know about it."
