Severe thunderstorms create large hail, rainbows

BOSTON — Severe thunderstorms are moving across southeastern New England this evening and bringing with them large amounts of hail. We'll be providing the latest updates below as needed, with the newest information and photos at the top.

10:30 p.m.

The storms have moved out of the area after causing two separate delays at Fenway Park where the Red Sox are playing the Minnesota Twins.

Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency reported as many as 3,500 electric customers without power throughout the state as outages peaked.

8:45 p.m.

Storms are continuing to pop up across the state, but in many areas where the skies have cleared beautiful rainbows are visible.

7:15 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning was just issued for parts of northern Worcester County. Kevin will be tracking the storm all night online with the latest warnings and watches sent through the Boston 25 News and weather apps.

6 p.m.

More than 2,000 people in Massachusetts are now with out power as new cells continue to pop from this storm front. Viewers from across the area have been sending Chief Meteorologist Kevin Lemanowicz pictures and videos of the hail, one of the most stunning came from Putney, Vt.

4:45 p.m.

Strong winds have knocked down some trees and utility poles in northern Massachusetts. While the number of reported outages remains low, fewer than 500 customers impacted, it will likely grow as the storm moves into more densely populated areas.

4 p.m.

Hail up to 1 inch, about the size of a quarter, has been reported in several communities across the Merrimack Valley.

Residents of northern Worcester County also reported hail, although in many cases it was smaller.
