Several Dorchester businesses damaged in overnight fire

BOSTON — Crews worked to extinguish a fire that damaged several businesses in Dorchester early Monday morning.

Fire crews were called to 86 Welles Avenue just before 1:30 a.m. When they arrived at the scene they found heavy smoke coming from the building, but no visible flames.

That made it challenging for firefighters to find the source of the blaze, but eventually the source was located and the fire was brought under control.

The Boston Fire Department has determined the cause of the fire was an electrical short circuit in the basement of the building. Officials told Boston 25 News the fire quickly spread, damaging a barbershop, hair salon, convenience store, and an empty storefront.

There was also an apartment in the basement of the building, but no injuries were reported.

Damages were estimated around $300,000.

A GoFundMe page has been created for Tarsha's Hair Factory, the hair salon damaged from that fire.
