Several Brockton stores busted for food stamp fraud

BROCKTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) Eight Brockton residents were arraigned on Thursday for the fraudulent use of food stamps.

The arrests came as part of a six-month probe into the alleged illegal practices of several Brockton stores, reports the Boston Herald.

Undercover officers working with the Plymouth County District Attorney's office claim they would hand over EBT cards to the store clerks who would then swipe the cards, enter incorrect prices, and pocket extra cash. In some cases, the clerks would reportedly ring in fake transactions and split the money with the undercover officers.

Some stores are accused of stocking their shelves with discounted products, but selling them at increased prices.

The owners of the Montello Street shop, B&D Mart, J.P. Communications, and the Dip N' Sip are all facing charges for their alleged roles in the illegal activity.
