Seven people displaced in overnight fire in Somerville

BOSTON — Seven people are without a home Friday morning after a fire broke out at a building in Somerville.

Fire Chief Patrick Sullivan said everyone made it out of the building safely on their own before firefighters arrived on Connecticut Ave.

More than two dozen firefighters from several cities responded to the call.

He said his crews had to adjust to the frigid temperatures while fighting the fire.

"The weather is always a challenge when it gets this cold," Chief Sullivan told Boston 25 News. "The water immediately freezes upon hitting the pavement. We had units spreading out salt and sand to help with some traction."

An initial investigation shows the fire appears to have started in the back of the third floor. The fire caused some of the windows in the house to blow out. Officials say improper disposal of smoking materials were to blame for the fire.

No injuries were reported in the incident. The State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause.
