'Selfie' tops list of words best left in 2013


This picture of a selfie in action went viral in 2013 - President Barack Obama snapped a selfie with other world leaders during Nelson Mandela's memorial service.

(MyFoxBoston.com) -- The word dubbed the year's best by Oxford Dictionary is now facing exile thanks to an annual list compiled by a Michigan school.

"Selfie" topped Lake Superior State University's 39th annual list of banished words. The list is made up entirely of words nominated by voters.

Oxford Dictionary defines it best, a selfie is "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smart phone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website."

The school's website was abuzz with comments shortly after the list's release. One comment from a woman named Lisa described the word as too "selfie-serving."

Miley Cyrus would be less than pleased with the word that came in second. The dance known as twerking took silver behind selfie.
