Secret sex offenders in Massachusetts

The arrest of John Burbine on dozens of child sex abuse charges is raising troubling questions about the way the state classifies sex offenders.

Burbine is a Level One sex offender because of a 1989 conviction for indecent assault and battery against a child.

The state considers Level One offenders a "low risk" to re-offend, but FOX Undercover found there are 1,061 Level One sex offenders convicted of sex crimes against children.

Those numbers date back to 2006, when the Romney administration agreed to release that breakdown.

FOX Undercover has tried to get updated numbers from the Patrick administration without any luck.

Investigative reporter Mike Beaudet spoke with victim advocate Laurie Myers about the case on Thursday.
