Seaport one step closer to adaptive traffic light system

BOSTON — A new traffic light system appears one step closer to becoming a reality in the Seaport.

In September, city officials said they were considering the area as a trial site for a new traffic management system, using "adaptive signal control technology."

The technology would adapt to automation so the system can adjust lights based on traffic flow in real time.

According to the Boston Herald, the state wants to spend $5 million to implement and test the new system.

If successful, it could be used in as many as 39 intersections.

MassDOT wants buses to have signal priority - and the system could also recognize people walking and bicyclists.

The system would be tested for three years.

The current system used in the Seaport date back to the 70's.
