Scott Brown joins international law firm

BOSTON (AP) - Former Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, who was defeated in his re-election bid last year, announced Monday that he had landed a new job with the international law firm of Nixon Peabody LLP.

Brown will serve as counsel in the firm's Boston office.

According to a statement from the firm, Brown will be involved in business and governmental affairs, with a focus on the financial services industry and commercial real estate.

"During my time in politics, I never hesitated to reach across the aisle to work with members of any political party to secure a preferable outcome," Brown said in the statement. "My approach is consistent with the way Nixon Peabody does business and I believe we can be successful together."

The firm's chief executive and managing partner, Andrew Glincher, said Brown's "personality and entrepreneurial spirit" would help in building relationships with clients.

Brown won a special election in January 2010 to fill the seat of the late Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy, but was defeated in November by Democrat Elizabeth Warren. He recently eschewed a chance to run in a special election to replace John Kerry, who left the Senate to become U.S. Secretary of State.

His relationship with the financial services industry became a key point of contention during last year's campaign.

He cast a key vote in favor of the Dodd-Frank financial reform bill in 2010, but was later accused by Warren and other Democrats of working behind the scenes to weaken the law. That led some critics to deride him as Wall Street's "favorite senator."

Brown, who also recently joined Fox News Channel as a commentator, remains popular in Massachusetts and has been mentioned as a possible candidate for governor in 2014.
