Scientists: Deadly shark attack on Cape is likely

Great white shark

CAPE COD, Mass. — We're still in the winter months, but scientists are already warning Cape Cod beach-goers to watch out for sharks.

According to the Cape Cod Times, scientists expect there to be a deadly attack on the Cape within the next few years. Officials say the population of sharks is on the rise, which forces them closer to the shore as they look for food.

"It's the combination of a large predator, and the things they eat, both gaining in population size and both coming back to lay claim to areas that historically were theirs 150 years ago," scientist George Burgess told the paper. "The inevitable conflict is that we have laid claim to those beaches for our recreation and sport."

Towns along the Cape say they plan to educate the public about sharks and when attacks are most likely to happen. Cape beach safety officials are also learning how technology, such as shark tracking apps and automated calling systems, may help prevent an attack.
