4 children, 1 adult injured after school bus crash in Quincy

QUINCY, Mass. — This story has been updated.

A bus driver and four kids were taken to South Shore Hospital Tuesday afternoon after a school bus crashed into a home in Quincy, according to police.

The Quincy Public Schools bus crashed into a home on Kidder Street after hitting an SUV, a fire hydrant, and a utility pole.

No one was injured in the home, but there was structural damage done and the power was knocked out to several homes on the street.

Thirty-two students and the driver were on the bus at the time of the crash, which happened around noon. The kids had been on their way home from a half-day of school at the Charles Bernazzani School.

Police Chief Paul Keenan said it appears as if an SUV pulled in front of the bus. After hitting the SUV, the bus knocked over a fire hydrant and utility pole before striking a wall and crashing into the house.

"It's a 30 miles an hour [area] and they're going about 50. People go way to fast," Martine Assaf said.

Martine Assaf told FOX25 she and her family weren't surprised there was an accident on the busy Kidder Street where her house sits. Assaf said she was shocked to find out a school bus had hit the home.

"It looks like there was an earthquake, everything is shaken up." she said.

Kidder Street was closed from Garfield to Quarry Street due to the wires down.

October 25, 2016

Dear Bernazzani Parents and Guardians,

As you may be aware, earlier this afternoon there was a bus accident on Quarry Street involving a number of our Bernazzani students. Four students and the bus driver were sent to area hospitals and thankfully, all have been discharged. The details of the accident are under investigation at this time. We are grateful for the immediate, professional response of the Quincy Police and Fire Departments, Brewster Ambulance, and Director of Transportation Michael Draicchio and his staff. A special thank you to the Sons of Italy for opening their doors for the children who were on the bus to wait there to be reunited with their parents.

In support of the students and families impacted by today's accident, Principal Peter Dionne or Assistant Principal Phil Diana will ride on the school bus in the morning and afternoon until students are once again comfortable with bus transportation. On Wednesday, additional counselors will be available at Bernazzani to meet with students and/or families any time during the day.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at 617-984-8701.

Sincerely,
Richard DeCristofaro, Ed.D.
