Saugus woman convicted of fatal hit-and-run

SALEM, Mass. (AP) - A Saugus woman has been convicted of running down and killing an 81-year-old man crossing a Saugus street to get to a restaurant and have dinner with his family.

Steffany Barbanti was found guilty Thursday in Salem Superior Court of leaving the scene of a fatal accident in the January 2010 death of Christos Agganis.

She faces up to 10 years in prison at sentencing scheduled for Oct. 16.

The 25-year-old Barbanti was arrested two years to the day after the death of Agganis.

Police say an anonymous tip led them to Barbanti, and investigators found she had work done on her SUV about the time Agganis was struck.

She denied striking Agganis and testified in court that a tree branch had fallen and broken her windshield.
