Sagging roof forces apartment building residents to evacuate

LAWRENCE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Residents of a 30-unit apartment building, located at 6 Inman St. in Lawrence, were forced to evacuate after the structure's roof began to sag on Monday night.

Fire officials told FOX 25 that the building has been evacuated and they are waiting on a structure report from an engineer.

The American Red Cross is assisting five families while preparing to open a shelter at the South Lawrence East Elementary/Middle School at 165 Crawford St. Several other families have not yet arrived at the apartment building.

The Red Cross has already provided more than 1,300 shelter stays to those affected by the storm - most of them forced out of their homes by power outages. As of Sunday evening the Red Cross had provided 2,961 meals and 1,433 snacks in shelters on Cape Cod, the Islands, and the South Shore.
