WATERTOWN, Mass. (AP)- Watertown police say thieves stole chalices, a gold cross, gold-plated Bibles and a safe during a break-in at a Greek Orthodox church.
Police say a thief or thieves removed a vent and smashed the glass behind it to enter Taxiarchae/Archangels Greek Orthodox Church through a boiler room door in the basement.
The burglary took place between about 10 p.m. Tuesday when a church meeting broke up and 7 a.m. Wednesday when a cleaner showed up for work and noticed a church office in disarray.
Police say the small drop safe with cash inside was bolted to the floor.
Lt. Michael Lawn thinks whoever stole the items was looking to sell them quickly to buy drugs.
Pastor the Rev. Demetrios Tonias says he's praying for the culprits.
