Runners raise money for the Glen Doherty Foundation

WINCHESTER, Mass. — Runners in Winchester hit the pavement on Sunday to help raise funds in honor of a fallen hero, Geln Doherty.

The annual road race in honor of Doherty, a Winchester native, is aimed at helping former soldiers take the next step in their lives. Doherty's legacy lives in scholarships that help his fallen comrades.

Its been five years since Glen lost his life in the 2012 terror attack in Benghazi, Libya when he was a Navy Seal.

Kate Quigley, Doherty's sister says "its hard to believe it's been 5 years".

The proceeds from the race will fund scholarships to ease the transition from military life and work to that of a civilian.

Glen's sister Kate says the foundation has given out 28 scholarships so far, namely to former special ops soldiers.

"They have no problem going overseas and going to the front lines, but taking that next step is really, really hard - so being able to help them is awesome."

"They're going back to school to get their MBA's, their doctorates, their pilots licenses," Kate said.

Quigley believes a record number of runners participated today, and among them was Boston 25 News' anchor Mark Ockerbloom.

"Guy had a gentle heart and a big beaming smile that was going all the time, and a warrior spirit," said Clint Emerson, a retired Navy Seal.

Not even the summer-like temperatures were able to stop runners from staying true to Glen's spirit and keeping his legacy alive.
