Romero retiring as Lawrence police chief

LAWRENCE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Lawrence Police Chief John Romero announced plans to retire Friday.

Romero, who started in Lawrence on Jan. 15, 1999, will retire on Sept. 3 after 43 years in law enforcement.

"I had a great career in the City of Lawrence," said Chief Romero. "When I came here, I never thought I would be here for 15 years; however I fell in love with the city and its people. I bought a home, I joined a neighborhood association an I made hundreds of friends along the way."

Lawrence Mayor William Lantigua said he accepted the announcement of Romero's retirement with a heavy heart. He described him as a man who dedicated an entire life to law enforcement.
