Robbery suspect dies after police chase through several towns

BROCKTON, Mass (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) – An armed robbery suspect has died after he was shot and wounded by a police officer after a chase through several towns that ended in East Bridgewater.

A source identified the robbery suspect as 47-year-old Jeffrey Wyatt, of Brockton, and a state trooper stationed at his Bud Avenue home confirmed his identity.

Massachusetts State Police said the suspect fired at police on Thatcher Street during a chase which began in Brockton following a robbery attempt at a CVS pharmacy Monday afternoon.

Authorities said the suspect entered the store with a gun and demanded prescription medication from the pharmacy located on Pleasant Street.

Witnesses said the suspect showed a shotgun during the robbery and fired out his window during the police pursuit, which ran through Brockton, Whitman and East Bridgewater.

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said that during the incident, a state police detective assigned to his office fired his weapon and hit the suspect.

Video from SkyFox showed a number of ambulances and police officers at the shooting scene as well as a black pickup truck surrounded by crime tape.

A source told FOX 25's Ted Daniel the officer was shot in the torso, but was wearing a bulletproof vest and suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. The officer went to Good Samaritan Hospital to be treated. Another officer was being evaluated for stress.

Police said the shooting scene was secure and no additional suspects were being sought.

Investigators searched for shell casings along the route.

An investigation of the shooting has been referred to the Cape and Island District Attorney's Office to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.

The identity of the suspect was not immediately released.
