RI men accused of using counterfeit $100 bills at Boston bar

BOSTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Two Rhode Island men were arraigned Tuesday for reportedly using counterfeit money at the bar inside the Charlesmark Hotel on Boylston Street in Boston.

Felix Perez, 23, of Providence, and Dana Leyland, 29, of Pawtucket, were arraigned on one count each of possessing counterfeit notes and uttering counterfeit currency.

Leyland is additionally charged with providing a false name to arresting officers, apparently because of outstanding warrants for related offenses.

According to police, a bartender at the Charlesmark Hotel called police around 9:15 p.m. Monday to report that three men had passed him what he believed was counterfeit $100 bills. Each of the men received change for their drinks and left when their drinks were finished.

The bartender, who noticed the bills looked slightly off, reportedly followed the men to Sola's, a nearby bar, where one of the suspects was able to avoid arrest.

While responding officers questioned the suspects, the Sola's bartender appeared and told police that two patrons had just turned in seven $100 bills found in the area where the suspects had been. Those bills were also believed to be counterfeit.

Officers took both men into custody and that was when Leyland reportedly gave a false name to police.

Leyland is wanted on three warrants charging him with possessing and uttering counterfeit bills out of Taunton and Attleboro District Courts.

Police notified the U.S. Secret Service of their arrests.

Perez was held on $1,000 cash bail, and Leyland was held on $7,500 cash bail. He was also held without bail pending transport to Taunton and Attleboro District Courts.

The suspects are tentatively scheduled to return to court on April 10 and April 16.
