RI lawmaker hopes to save father-daughter dances

PROVIDENCE, R. I. (FOX 25/MyFoxBoston.com) -- A Rhode Island lawmaker has a plan to save gender-specific events, like father-daughter dances, despite the state's anti-discrimination laws.

Sen. Hanna Gallo announced legislation on Tuesday allowing schools to host activities specifically for students of one gender, as long as similar events are open to students of the opposite gender.

Last year, school officials in Cranston canceled their father-daughter dance. School committee members asked lawmakers to reevaluate the law to allow such events in the future.

Gallo says her legislation would ensure gender-specific events to continue, without weakening the current state law.
