NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island attorney who represented victims' families and survivors of a nightclub fire that killed 100 people in 2003 has been charged with drunken driving in Newport.
Newport police say they stopped 63-year-old city resident Brian Cunha just before 1 a.m. Saturday after he rolled through a stop sign. He was charged with driving under the influence and refusing to submit to a chemical test.
Police say Cunha's breath smelled of alcohol and his speech was slurred.
Cunha didn't immediately return a phone message Sunday. He is scheduled to appear in District Court on Sept. 5.
Cunha handled lawsuits connected to The Station fire in West Warwick, which also injured more than 200 people. Authorities said pyrotechnics during a show by the band Great White started the blaze.
