BEVERLY (AP)- A now-retired Manchester-by-the-Sea police sergeant has pleaded guilty to domestic assault and firearms charges following an argument with his wife last year.
The Salem News reports that 54-year-old John Swallow of Beverly was sentenced Tuesday to serve six months of a two-year jail term. A Salem judge also sentenced Swallow to two years' probation, including mental health evaluations and random alcohol testing. Because of time already spent in jail, Swallow was eligible for parole in three days.
Prosecutors said Swallow threatened his wife last October with a handgun, which discharged after she fled the house. Swallow said it went off accidentally.
His attorney said Swallow, who's also an emergency medical technician, had been depressed since responding on duty last February to the suicide of a Hamilton police officer he knew.
