Report: Crime down 11-percent in the City of Boston

BOSTON — Crime in the City of Boston is continuing to decline, according to a report from the Boston Police Department released Wednesday.

For the first quarter of 2017, Boston saw an 11-percent decline in "Part One" crime, which includes murder and nonnegligent homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny-theft and arson. (The crimes rates are compared from January 1 through March 26, 2017 to the same time period last year.)

Here's a break down of the report's findings:

  • Violent crime down 6-percent
  • Homicides down 45-percent
  • Rape and attempted rape down 19-percent
  • Total aggravated assaults down 11-percent
  • Total burglary down 14-percent
  • Robbery up 7-percent
  • Arrests down 16-percent

Officers also took 155 guns off the streets of Boston this year. Based on the report's findings, police say Boston remains one of the safest major cities of its size in the country.
