Ref assaulted at basketball tournament in Brockton

BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) - Police say they responded to a church basketball tournament in Brockton over the weekend after the referee was attacked during the game and someone threatened to "shoot the place up."

No one was arrested but police say a 19-year-old man will be summoned to court to respond to charges including assault and battery.
Police Sgt. Scott Besarick tells The Enterprise officers responded to a school at about 1 p.m. Saturday for a report of a disturbance.
The referee told officers a man threw a plastic bottle at him, striking his lower body, and punched him in the side of the head. Others joined in.
Police told about 50 players and spectators to go home after hearing rumors that someone was planning to return with a gun.
