Red Sox sign Cardinals reliever Mujica

BOSTON ( -- Right-handed pitcher Edward Mujica has been signed to a two-year, $9.5 million contract with the Boston Red Sox, the team's General Manager Ben Cherington announced Saturday.

An All-Star in 2013, Mujica, a free agent, had been with the St. Louis Cardinals, though he did not pitch against Red Sox players in October's World Series.

The reliever had a 2-1 record with 37 saves and a 2.78 ERA over 65 appearances for the Cardinals in the regular season.

With the signing of the 29-year-old Venezuelan native, the Red Sox' 40-man roster is at 40, according to a press release from the team.

The deal, agreed to Thursday and announced Saturday, calls for salaries of $4.75 million a season. He can earn $1 million annually in performance based on games finished: $125,000 for 20 and each additional five through 55.
