BOSTON — The American Red Cross says it is in urgent need of blood and platelets.

A winter blood shortage has risen after the severe weather of the past weeks and the Red Cross’s supply has been depleted.

According to the agency, more than 150 blood drives in the area have been canceled, which has caused as estimate or more than 5,000 donations to go uncollected.

The Red Cross is asking anyone willing or able to donate blood as soon as possible.
