Quincy ferry terminal faces 6-month shutdown

QUINCY, Mass. (AP) - The MBTA says the ferry terminal at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy will remain closed for at least six months to make repairs following a water main break last week.

A T spokesman says the shutdown is necessary because an already deteriorating sea wall at the terminal was further damaged by the water main break, making the dock unstable.

The Quincy terminal ran 22 trips to and from Boston every weekday between 5:45 a.m. and 10:45 p.m. For the indefinite future, the Quincy boats will operate on the same schedule out of Hewitt's Cove terminal in Hingham.

A Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority spokesman tells The Patriot Ledger about 220 commuters per day board boats at Quincy this time of year.

Repairs are expected to cost more than $6 million.
