"She just was completely deflated and lethargic and wouldn't move," Ashliegh Goebel of the Arizona Humane Society told KSAZ.

KPHO reported that a Phoenix police officer in the area saw the Australian shepherd mix and called AZ Humane's Emergency Animal Medical Technicians for help.

After multiple efforts, the exhausted puppy was lifted out of the canal and taken in by AZ Humane.

"Upon examination, Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital veterinarians found that she was very malnourished and incredibly weak, unable to stand on her own," AZ Humane  wrote in a blog post. "Her paws were wounded and her toenails were completely worn down from her attempts to climb out of the canal. The medical team administered IV fluids, gave her medication and wrapped her in blankets."

According to the post, the pup was up and walking after a few days, wagging her tail.

Although she was not microchipped, she will remain in the care of the Humane Society's clinic while it searches for the owner.

People reported that the officer who rescued the pup hopes to adopt her if no owners come forward.

"She was swept away by the strong undercurrent and swimming for her life."
