Up to 10 suspects sought in shooting at Providence Place Mall

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A man was shot at the parking garage by the Nordstrom department store at the Providence Place Mall following an altercation, according to police.

Providence Police responded to reports of a shooting at the parking garage by the Nordstrom department store at the Providence Place Mall on Monday just before 5 p.m.

The mall was placed on lockdown after armed officers walked into the building, warning people to stay away.

Workers tell us they were forced to hide in the stock room, while others ran and just tried hiding anywhere they could.

"I looked out the window, all of these tons of cop cars keep pulling up, grabbing rifles out of their trunks," said Jamal Lee, who works at the mall. "My manager just pulled us behind the counter and locked the doors."

Police say surveillance footage shows a fight which happened right outside the foot locker, and shortly after the cameras caught the shooting.

"The initial investigation reveals there was a fight between two groups of kids in the mall, outside the footlocker," said Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements.

The Providence Public Safety Department has identified the victim as a 19-year-old man with non-life threatening injuries. He was shot in the leg and is recovering at the Rhode Island Hospital.

Police are still searching for suspects and do not believe it is an active shooter situation. They are currently looking for up to 10 suspects.

Although that is a fairly large amount of suspects to be looking for, police say they know exactly who they are searching for.

The second floor of the parking garage at the Nordstrom side of the mall was evacuated and police are reviewing security footage.

"My manager was telling everyone to get behind the counter, she was counting everyone that was there," said Tahlia, who works at the mall.

The mall has been closed and is reported safe.

Luckily, no one else was hurt in the shooting.
