Providence kindergartener struck, killed by truck

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A kindergartener is dead after being struck by a pickup truck in a street in Providence.

Police say 6-year-old Derrick Anthony Johnson Jr. was hit Sunday evening when he got out of his mother's car and ran across the street to his aunt's house. They say he was struck and killed by a truck driven by 39-year-old Andres Morales.

The Providence Journal reports that Morales pleaded not guilty on Monday to a charge of driving without a license in District Court in Providence. He was ordered held on an immigration detainer.

The Providence school department issued a written statement Monday saying crisis teams were being made available to friends, classmates and school staff affected by the boy's death.
