Prosecutor announces review of Remy murder case

WOBURN, Mass. (AP) - Two veteran prosecutors have been named to conduct an independent review of the circumstances surrounding the murder case involving the son of Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced the review Wednesday in the wake of criticism of her office's handling of the case.

Jared Remy is accused of fatally stabbing his girlfriend, 27-year-old Jennifer Martel, the day after he was released on personal recognizance after allegedly assaulting her. He has pleaded not guilty in her killing.

Ryan's office has defended its decision not to seek to have Remy held in the earlier case, saying Martel had chosen not to pursue a restraining order against him.

Ryan said former Essex District Attorney Kevin Burke and Norfolk County First Assistant District Attorney Jeanmarie Carroll will conduct the review.
