BEVERLY, Mass. — The fire department evacuated Beverly City Hall Tuesday because of a potential gas leak.

The department confirmed a heavy smell of gas in the area.

The gas company was called to the scene to try and pinpoint any potential leak.

Two manholes in front of City Hall were identified as the source of smoke, which was coming from a fire in an underground electrical vault.

National Grid was called to shut off the power and fix the problem.

All buildings were reopened by 1 p.m.
