Popular knives recalled due to laceration hazard

WASHINGTON — Millions of popular knives have been recalled because they can break during use, posing a laceration hazard.

The affected Calphalon Contemporary Cutlery carving, chef, paring, santoku and utility knives were sold individually and in sets. They were made between August 2008 and March 2016.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday that 2 million units were sold in the United States, and about 7,000 were sold in Canada.

The popular knives were available for purchase at places like J.C. Penney, Kohl’s, Macy’s. They were also sold at other retailers across the country, including on Amazon.

Calphalon said it has received nearly 30 reports of finger or hand lacerations, including injuries that required stitches. The company said it has also received about 3,150 reports of broken knives.

Consumers who own the knives are advised to immediately stop using them and contact Calphalon for a replacement.
