• Polito: A Cool Welcome

Arthur Fonzarelli is now qualified to hold a US Senate seat from Massachusetts. Why not? The Fonz is synonymous with the attribute that was touted by both Gov. Deval Patrick and Lt. Gov. Tim Murray as they introduced the designated interim Senator William "Mo" Cowan.

Both Fonzie and Mo are cool. Gov. Patrick and Lt. Gov. Murray referenced Mo's coolness as one of his qualifications. We'll have to wait and see if Cowan will give thumbs up to express his support for a bill. Until then, we can ponder some other questions that are still left unanswered.

First, why did Lt. Gov. Murray introduce Gov. Patrick, who then introduced Cowan? Perhaps, the governor wanted to give his second in command some healing time in front of cameras without my colleague Sharman Sacchetti asking questions about ties to corruption and alleged time with the family.

Lt. Gov. Murray was first to call Cowan cool. He compared him to President Obama, George Clooney and Patriots QB Tom Brady. Too bad Murray's driving has been compared to Ted Kennedy, Patrick Kennedy, and Evel Knievel.

Next, was today's announcement the birth of another candidate for governor? Stop me if you've heard this one before, Cowan denied he has any aspirations for elected office. I immediately fed that statement into my "baloney" meter and it pegged at 10. Now that Murray's candidacy has crashed and burned, his loyal boss is free to anoint another to replace him.

Finally, and in repetition, is this truly the most qualified individual for the job? The only constitutional requirement is that the person be at least 30-years-old, a U.S. citizen for at least nine years, and a resident of the state for which they were chosen. Cowan's got all three, but he remarked that he'll have a "learning curve" on how to get around the Capitol building. Sen. Cowan will certainly not be the least qualified person to ever represent Massachusetts. That bar was lowered last November.

I'll have more on this later. Meanwhile, my indigestion is getting worse.
