SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Gov. Deval Patrick says he believes it's appropriate for Olga Roche to stay on at DCF at her current $137,000 salary, even though she resigned as DCF Commissioner Tuesday in the wake of the deaths of three children.
During a stop in Springfield, Patrick told FOX 25 political reporter Sharman Sacchetti that Roche "has tremendous value and we're looking forward to taking advantage of what she has to contribute for a period of time."
When Sacchetti asked how long Roche would be staying with the agency, Patrick told her, "I don't know the answer to your question," and directed Sacchetti to the Office of Health and Human Services. After repeated requests, that office got back to FOX 25 Thursday evening and said Roche will stay on as an advisor through August 1.
Earlier Thursday, when asked if Patrick thought there should be a timeline on Roche's departure, he responded, "I think there ought to be. I'm sure there is. You keep asking me what it is. I don't know."
Erin Deveney has taken over as Interim DCF Commissioner. When asked if the state is now paying two people to perform the job of one, Patrick told us, "No," and that Roche "brings a lot to the table, but she does not have the confidence of the public or many on the line staff of the leadership position."
As DCF's interim commissioner, Deveney will receive $123,900 in salary.
