Reports: Boston near surrounding community deal with Mohegan Sun

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Boston is reportedly close to signing a "surrounding community" agreement with Mohegan Sun.

The Boston Globe and the Boston Herald both report the city has an agreement in principle with the casino developer. Financial terms are still being worked out, but the Globe says the city has agreed to drop its demand for a vote by residents of East Boston.

On Wednesday, the Globe reported that the deal would net East Boston $18 million annually. The Herald reports different numbers on the reported deal.

Mohegan wants to build a billion dollar gaming resort on the Revere side of Suffolk Downs. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh had pushed to be declared a host community for the resort, but he was rejected by the gaming commission.

Mohegan Sun has not commented on any proposed deal.

A surrounding community agreement is used to provide compensation to cities and towns which are impacted by casino developments in neighboring communities.
