Police warn Boston University students of check cashing scam

A serious warning to students and anyone using an ATM around the Boston University campus.

A person is approaching students and asking them to cash a check for him then give him the cash. In some instances, he’s told the students to keep part of the cash for themselves.

The suspect claims not to have a bank account and the cash is needed for an important purchase.

However, once the checks are looked at by banks they are determined to be forgeries.

"Someone was going around and asking for money they needed it for some reason and then giving them a fraudulent check and then getting the money out and the checks would bounce and come back and people were out of money,” BU student Peter Lattanzio said.

Some students have lost hundreds of dollars in the scam.

Police are warning everyone not to cash checks for any strangers.
