Police: shoplifter jumps into river in W. Mass.

WEST SPRINGFIELD (AP) - West Springfield police say they caught an alleged shoplifter after he jumped off the Memorial Bridge into the Connecticut River.

Police told The Republican of Springfield that the man stole nearly $15 worth of merchandise from a grocery store in West Springfield on Sunday morning and fled.

Officers say the man jumped into the river and was later found clinging to a bridge pillar by firefighters who had launched a rescue boat.

The man's name hasn't been released. He was arrested, and police say they're trying to confirm his identity.
