Police: Serious crash shuts down I-495 in Chelmsford

CHELMSFORD, Mass. — A stretch of 495 north was shut down after a serious car crash left one person dead in Chelmsford Saturday morning, according to police.

All lanes have since reopened, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

The highway was closed after an accident at exit 33, and Massachusetts State Police tweeted traffic was being diverted off the Interstate at exit 32.

According to Mass. State Police, the two-car accident killed one person and left another with serious injuries.

State police said a Ford Focus crossed the median and hit a Toyota Camry heading north on I-495 shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday.

The driver of teh focus was found dead on scene, police said. The driver of the Camry was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Police said they are investigating why the Focus crossed the median.
