Police search for dump truck in fatal 128 crash

BURLNGTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) - State police are looking for a vehicle carrying a mattress that fell onto Route 128 south in Burlington, causing a rollover crash that resulted in the death of one driver.

The crash between a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Tundra occurred at about 3 p.m. Tuesday and shut several lanes of southbound traffic for more than an hour.

One driver, Frida Litvak, 56, of Framingham, died at Lahey Hospital. Investigators tell FOX 25 Litvak died after having what they describe as a medical incident.

"She always used to help people, she treated everyone like her family," Litvak's sister, Galina Litvak said.

Police believe the Corolla, driven by Litvak, was rear-ended by the Tundra when it slowed to avoid hitting a twin-sized mattress in the roadway. The collision caused the Tundra to roll over.

The driver of the Tundra, 43-year-old Andrew Lawendowski, of Charlton, sustained minor injuries in the crash.

Authorities are seeking a dump truck with a white cab and a dark-colored bed. At the time of the crash the truck was said to be occupied by two men.

It is believed that the dump truck dropped the mattress. According to Massachusetts General Law chapter 85 section 36, drivers are required to load a vehicle to prevent it from dropping debris or other potential hazards to vehicles. It also states that anyone violating the law will be punished by a fine of not less than $50 or more than $200.
