Police: No charges in Wellfleet cyclist's death

WELLFLEET, Mass. (AP) — Police have decided not to bring charges against the driver of a car that struck and killed a 16-year-old Wellfleet boy riding his bicycle.

Police on Monday announced that the investigation has determined that 16-year-old Miles Tibbetts was crossing Route 6 on his bike to get to work on Saturday when he was struck by a car driven by a 76-year-old Wellfleet woman. He died later at a Boston hospital.

Tibbetts was not wearing a helmet even though state law requires all children 16 and under to wear a helmet while riding a bike.

Lt. Michael Hurley tells the Cape Cod Times ( ) reconstruction of the accident and witness statements led police to their decision not to pursue criminal charges.
