Police: Man spit on, punched MBTA driver

MALDEN, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A 19-year-old man was arrested after police said he spit on and punched an MBTA bus driver Tuesday morning.

Police said the incident happened at Oak Grove Station.

The driver told police that Ryan O'Donnell, of Wakefield, boarded the bus and had insufficient funds on his Charlie Card. When the bus driver asked him to pay, he said O'Donnell became belligerent and asked to ride for free.

Police said when the driver refused to give O'Donnell a ride, he turned to leave the bus before turning back and spitting on the driver. Police said O'Donnell then punched the driver several times in the face.

O'Donnell was arrested on assault and battery charges.

The driver was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
