Police: Man admitted to drunkenly hitting mother, children pedestrians in Salem

SALEM, Mass. — A man accused of drunkenly hitting a mother and two children with his car in Salem Sunday night has been held on $2,500 bail.

Dexter Marvin Mitchell, 52, was also ordered to stay off drugs and alcohol when he was arraigned on charges of drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Mitchell allegedly had been drinking when he hit a woman and her children on Bridge Street in Salem just above the commuter rail platform as Halloween revelers were making their way in an out of the city.

Police say the mother and her twin girls, both 10, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries when they were hit.

Mitchell’s car was found parked near a dumpster outside a Wendy’s with a dent in the hood, according to police. Witnesses also told police they say Mitchell drop a 12-pack of beer into the dumpster when he arrived.

Police say they found the car after Mitchell approached a Lieutenant at the scene of the accident and said he was the one who hit the three pedestrians. Mitchell allegedly told admitted to police he had been drinking while watching the Packers game with friends.

According to Mitchell’s attorney, he has worked an assistant to children with special needs.
