Police make arrest in 1991 Springfield slaying


SPRINGFIELD (AP) - A Springfield man has pleaded not guilty in theslaying of a 90-year-old woman two decades ago.

Fifty-four-year-old Faustino Diaz was held without bail after hisarraignment Tuesday on murder and aggravated rape charges.

Hampden District Attorney Mark Mastroianni said policehad recently obtained a DNA sample from Diaz, who was a maintenance worker atthe elderly housing complex where the victim lived.

Myrtle Marrett was found beaten to death in her apartment in 1991. Her bodywas found by a relative who went to check on her.

Marrett's son, David Marrett, tells The Republican of Springfield he'sshocked but pleased by the arrest. Marrett said his mother was a "decent,caring person" who had been a missionary. He said she would have forgivenher attacker, who couldn't have known what he was doing.
