Police investigating report of possible trouble ahead of Wakefield basketball game

WAKEFIELD, Mass. – The Wakefield Police Department was on alert Friday night after an apparent mention of possible trouble at the basketball game against Winchester.

A student told officials she overheard a disturbing conversation in the girls’ bathroom that lead to the precautions.

“The gist of that conversation, one was saying to the other don’t go to the game my boyfriend is going to start some trouble and they thought they heard the word bomb,” Wakefield Police Chief Richard Smith said.

School officials and police took no chances, sending a letter home to parents warning of the extra precautions.

“This claim is unsubstantiated by any further evidence. However, the Wakefield Police Department, plans to increase security for the game,” the letter said.

Four cruisers sat outside the game of Winchester High School while police searched bags and winter coats of everyone entering inside.

“We deployed extra personnel down here to check bags and make sure it’s a safe environment tonight,” Smith said. “We search every back pack, bulky clothing, heavy coats and what not.”

Police say they will continue their investigation to get to the bottom of this.
