Police investigating after Commuter Rail train hits car in Shirley

SHIRLEY, Mass. -- A Commuter Rail train collided with a sedan Friday night in Shirley.

The crash happened around 6:45 p.m. on the Fitchburg line, and trains in both directions were delayed for several hours after.

It's unclear how many passengers were in the vehicle, but no injuries were reported.

Residents who live near the track said they heard the impact.

"I ran and told him to get out of the shower, a train hit a car, and so we threw our shoes on and I called 911," one neighbor said.

A source told Boston 25 News the man who had been driving the car made a turn onto what he thought was a road, but ended up getting stuck on the tracks.

He was able to get out of the vehicle before it was hit by the train.

"I asked him, I said, is anybody else in the car and he said no and I asked if he was okay and he was just shaken up but he was OK," a neighbor said.

MBTA buses were used to pick up the stranded passengers.
