Police say the safe was stolen from St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Lexington, Mass. between Sunday night and Monday morning. The safe was later found dumped across the street from the church on Meriam Street.
The safe was found unopened.
“My initial reaction was, ‘did this just happen?’” said Father Demetri Costarakis.
Father Demetri says when he walked up to the church Monday morning, he found several broken stained glass windows. When he went inside, he found the church's 400-pound safe was gone and called the police.
Police say nothing had been stolen and the safe was still locked.

The safe was found near homeowner Bob Sacco’s residence. His family had no idea the safe was there.
“Police came up and saw my daughter and asked if we knew there was a safe there and she said no and she looked out and saw it,” said Sacco.
Residents are glad the safe was found unopened, but say they're shocked anyone would break in and steal from a church.
“It's horrible! They just had a huge festival here.” said resident Laurie Legnon. “They do a lot for the community. It's horrible!”
While Father Demetri says what happened is troubling, he is praying for whoever is involved.
“We forgive with the hope that anyone of us will be forgiven whenever any one of us does something wrong,” Father Demitri said.
No arrests have been made.
