Police ID armed robbery suspect killed in head-on crash during police chase

RANDOLPH, Mass. — An armed robbery suspect was killed Wednesday evening after slamming head-on into another vehicle during a police chase in Randolph.

The suspect, who has been identified as Michael Berg, 37, of Holbrook, allegedly walked into a store on North Main Street Wednesday afternoon with a sawed-off shotgun.

Surveillance video from inside the store showed Berg fire a round into the floor and hit the drink cooler.

The 63-year-old store clerk said that the second he saw the sawed-off shotgun, he didn't even think twice, he just handed over the money.

"Someone come in here and ask for money 'quick, quick, give me money, hurry up,'" the clerk said.

He said he was able to get Berg’s license plate number and provided that to police, who then issued an alert and found his address in Holbrook.

Police said they spotted Berg after the robbery, and even though they tried to block his vehicle he was able to escape.

Officers chased him for less than three miles and about a half hour after they first spotted him, Berg got into a violent, head-on crash on Union Street on the Holbrook-Randolph line.

Berg received serious injuries and died at a hospital.

The driver of the other vehicle, who hasn’t been identified, was also injured but officials said they believe his injuries are non-life-threatening.

The incident remains under investigation.
