Police: Hull man arrested for stealing 65-year-old’s purse

HINGHAM, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Police have arrested a Hull man accused of stealing a 65-year-old woman's purse while she waited in the check-out line inside a Stop and Shop.

The incident occurred on Jan. 13 around 3:20 p.m. at the Stop and Shop in Hingham.

According to police, the woman was unloading groceries from her cart when the suspect, later identified as John Mulloy, grabbed her purse and ran out of the store. The victim's credit cards were used at a gas station and at a store in South Weymouth before they were reported stolen.

Four days after the purse was stolen, a woman attempted to cash one of the victim's checks at a Hull bank, but the transaction was denied.

The female suspect used a Mass. driver's license that was not her own; however, police were able to identify the woman using the surveillance video.

The female suspect, a 23-year-old Bellingham woman, identified Mulloy, and police took him into custody on Feb. 1.

Mulloy was charged with larceny from a person 65 or older and conspiracy. His bail was set at $240; however, the suspect was unable to make bail and held over the weekend. He was arraigned on Feb. 4.

The Bellingham woman who attempted to cash the victim's check is being summonsed to Hingham Court on the same charges as Mulloy. As of Wednesday, she had not been arraigned.

Mulloy and the Bellingham woman are also being investigated by Weymouth Police for reportedly using the victim's stolen cards. The Bellingham woman is also being investigated by Hull Police for attempting to cash the victim's check.

A second purse theft that occurred at the Whole Foods in Hingham on Jan. 11 is still under investigation.
